The dictionary defines repetition as “the action of repeating something that has already been said or written, the recurrence of an action or event” Every successful person I know or have read about seem to have this one thing in common. They have repeatedly carried out an action over time that they become experts in their field. Think about any accomplished sports man or woman you know – they did not become successful overnight. These men or women spent nights and days practicing and rehearsing until they developed their skills, to the point that excelling at what they do almost became natural. You too can become the best in whatever you do today, by the power of repetition.
“It’s the repetition of affirmations that leads to belief, and once that belief becomes a deep conviction, things begin to happen” Claude Bristol
“Whatever you plant in your subconscious mind and nourish it with repetition and emotion, will one day become your reality” – Earl Nightingale
Do you remember the first time you learned to drive a car? You were conscious of almost every action, like changing the gears, turning the wheels and so forth. You noticed every single vehicle you passed along the way and were affected in some way by the actions of the other driver. What’s the situation today? Completely different, I guess. You are thinking of the next meal or movie you will see while driving, it’s become almost an unconscious action for most of us.
Is there any particular area of your life you are looking to develop or getting better at today? Maybe you want to make more money, become more successful and accomplished in your career, develop a closer relationship with God or your family or perhaps achieve some seemingly difficult goals. The truth is that you CAN achieve whatever you set your mind to achieve. It could be that you are struggling with doubt and lack of self-belief. How do you develop the faith to overcome self-doubt?
1. Faith: When we repeat something many times over, it reinforces the message and eventually the subconscious mind accepts it as being true. Faith comes by hearing and hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17). If you begin today to feed your mind with the right stuff, stay away from negative people and continually tell yourself you are capable of becoming who you want to be, overtime your subconscious mind will come to believe this as true as you will begin to live it out.
“You’ll never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine” – John C. Maxwell
2. Discipline: Make it a daily disciple to listen to something motivating and inspiring first thing in the morning and last thing as night before going to bed at. Try this for the next 30 days. Deliberately refuse to turn on the TV, check your mobile phone or read the newspapers until you have practiced listening to something edifying. There is an immense power in doing something over and over again, irrespective of the size or magnitude of action. Over time, these actions develop into habits and ultimately become automatic reflexes.
3. Auto-Suggestion: Do yourself a favour by telling yourself that you can. Whenever you catch yourself thinking a negative thought or saying something contrary to what you desire, stop immediately, change the channel in your mind. Keep telling yourself that you can. A lot of people feel stuck in their lives today. They find themselves in a state of health, relationships, jobs or businesses they do not like. Inwardly, there is a desire to change and get something better, however, there is also a contrary and equally powerful feeling of helplessness. They seem to lack the will power to make that needed transition. The reason people tend to think they cannot do certain things is because they look at the size of the problem and then reason that it will take a lot of time, energy and effort to accomplish the goal they want and they end up giving up. The attitude of winners is to repeatedly tell themselves that they can and will succeed, no matter the huddle. Always pay attention to your self-talk. Ultimately, success requires the repetition of right actions everyday.
